We look to the clean slate that the winter starkness brings us. This is the time to plot our future, to look forward, to plan, and put our wishes into motion.     Yes I know, it's February and it's cold. But guess what? It is also the time of year to get a good start on this year's garden.

    Now is the time to prune your roses and cut back last years old growth from your perennials. By now the seed heads are empty if they were left for the birds. If you cut them back now, before new growth appears, you won't have to worry about damage caused by your feet. If you didn't leave them standing last fall, plan on doing it this coming fall. Your avian friends will be most thankful, plus it gives the garden protection, character and interest during the Winter.
